Climatically, Urakawa is a very pleasant place to live. Due to its proximity to the sea, Urakawa is blessed with relatively cool summers and mild winters compared to the rest of Hokkaido.

Social Services

Urakawa is enhancing home-care services and facilities designed for elderly people, as well as promoting an easy-access scheme for wheelchair users.

Education

Urakawa provides learning opportunities, such as horseback riding, that are tailored to the region's traditions and characteristics. Urakawa also teaches children subjects that will prepare them for today's international demands. It encourages volunteer activities, incorporates international exchanges into the school's curriculum and eagerly welcomes teachers of other nationalities.

Urakawa must be one of the most international towns in Hokkaido. Foreign people who live in Urakawa work as equestrian specialists at the horse farms and as teachers of English in the school system. The town has good international links and plans are currently underway to organize a sister-city program*. The people of Urakawa are enthusiastic for the proposed cultural exchange program and the possibilities for mutual exchange.

*Newmarket (Forest Heath, England) world-famous as a center for racing, training, breeding and sale of horses, would make it an ideal partner for Urakawa.
